The irony of Juneteenth

Today marks the fourth official federal holiday for “Juneteenth”.

For those not familiar with this latest contrivance to placate the “feel good” coalition in this country with meaningless virtue signaling, here is a brief history:

The tyrant* Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, signed in September of 1862 taking effect on January 1, 1863, declared slaves held in the Confederate States to be “free”. But only in the Confederate States. Slaves in the Union remained slaves until the ratification of the XIII Amendment in December, 1865. As of the 1860 census, there were 451,021 slaves in Union states and territories.

The Confederate States, of course, couldn’t care less what Lincoln had to say and carried on the best they could, and with communications being what they were at the time, many Negros didn’t get the message. But as Union troops slowly rolled the Confederacy back, word spread, and the Negros discovered they were “free”**.

On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger issued an order in Galveston, Texas, effectively reinforcing (or stating his intent to enforce) the Emancipation Proclamation:

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.
General Order No.3, as issued by General Gordon Granger, June 19, 1865

A couple of things to note here: First, the change in relationship from “masters and slaves” to “employer and hired labor.” This is why I refer to Juneteenth as “Take Your Negro For A Walk Day”. In essence, they were told, “Yes, you’re free to roam about the cabin, but when you’re done, please return to your seat.”

Second, freed Blacks were advised to not to gather “at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”

Really? Here’s where the irony of Juneteenth begins to show.

Waitin’ fer da check

Allegedly emancipated and free, the Blacks are still on the dole of their former masters. Only now, they don’t have to contribute labor in exchange for their upkeep***. As of 2021, Blacks comprise 13.4% of the US population, yet 50.1% of the recipients of Food Stamps (now SNAP), Temporary Assistance, and Rental Subsidies are Black.

It gets better. Oftentimes one will hear people say “There are more White people on welfare [government assistance] than Black people”. And in real numbers, that is true. But not as a percent of their respective population. The following is a combination of two graphs from the government’s own website:

The numbers are the percentage of people of that race on each government program.

This is a telling graph. First, the numbers next to each colored bar represent the percentage of that population exclusive of other races receiving each form of government assistance. For example, in the SNAP program (formerly food stamps), 23.5 million Whites receive aid, whereas only 11.6 million Blacks collect the same benefit. But—and this is a big but— 23.5 million is only 9.5% of the White population in the United States, whereas 11.6 million is 26.7% of the Black population.

And so it goes for every form of government assistance, except the two that primarily benefit older Americans: Social Security and Medicare. In a nutshell, the Black population is growing and getting younger and collecting a larger respective percentage of government benefits, while the White population is aging out. It makes sense that Whites would benefit more from Social Security and Medicare.

An estimated 47.9 million people in the U.S. identified as Black in 2022. The Black population has grown by more than 10 million since 2000, when 36.2 million of the U.S. population identified as Black, marking a 32% increase over roughly two decades.
In 2022, there were 5.1 million foreign-born Black Americans, about 11% of the U.S. Black population. This is an increase from 2000, when 2.4 million people, or 7%, among the Black population were foreign born….

The U.S. Black population is young. The median age of Black people in 2022 was 32.1 years, nearly six years younger than the U.S. population’s median age of 38.0. Roughly 30% of the entire Black population was below the age of 20 while 12% were 65 or older.

General Granger’s Juneteenth order said freed Blacks should “remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages.” In addition to the above showing that message was not taken to heart, also consider two other points:

Remain quietly at home: Here are the top five cities with the worst crime statistics, and the percentage of that city which is Black (keeping in mind that Blacks make up only 13.4% of the US population as a whole, thus implying a larger concentration of Blacks):

    • St. Louis, MO = 43% Black
    • Detroit, MI = 77% Black
    • Baltimore, MD = 57% Black
    • Memphis, TN = 62% Black
    • Little Rock, AR = 40% Black

These statics are taken from the FBI’s website, so they may in fact be under reported.

Working for wages: 49% of Black households earn less than $50,000 per year. In fairness, there are likely a variety of reasons for this. But one must ask: if 50.1% of the Black population is receiving some form of government assistance, where is the incentive to work harder and earn more?

Lastly, in addition to the cost of the White largess disseminated through government assistance programs, there is the cost of the “holiday” itself. Juneteenth is now the 11th Federal holiday. It is estimated that each Federal holiday costs the American tax-payer $818 Million dollars, not including the postal service or the military.

In spite of all this, the sock-puppet president signed into law the making of Juneteenth a Federal holiday on June 17, 2021.

Which brings us back full-circle to the irony of Juneteenth: Blacks now get a day to celebrate their freedom to collect money from Whites without actually having to work for it, and at the same time, close down the very government that pays the benefits for a day, adding to the overall cost.

    Amerika Erwache!

*Disclaimer: Abraham Lincoln was my third-cousin. His 2nd great-grandparents and my 7th were the same people. It’s not my fault.
** Interestingly, on the same side of the family but a different branch, my kin released their slaves around 1864 as the war-criminal Sherman marched through Georgia.
*** For the record, I’m not in favor of enslaving other peoples. I prefer everyone keep to themselves, accept responsibility for themselves, and generally mind their own business. As Jefferson Davis said, “all we ask is to be let alone.” I think importing Blacks to the Americas was a horrible idea.

I agree. Bringing slaves to America was a terrible idea. Who is responsible for the Negroe problem here? White people are. We dragged them here in chains, and now we have to deal with the consequences.

The Black population of this country has always remained remarkably stable. Usually from 12 – 15 percent. Interestingly, it seems to go up slightly during periods of high unemployment. I guess that’s because they have more time on their hands and sex is free, and the government will pay for any children born as a result. If Blacks were never brought here as slaves, their population here would be around two percent because of immigration. Two percent isn’t too bad. A few Black people are a novelty. A lot of them is a problem. That is a problem we created. I guess you could say we made our bed, now we have to lie on it.
